Attorney Beverley Rogers to talk at Westchester college

Attorney Beverley Rogers has been invited to speak at Westchester Community College on March 6, as part of the college’s Women’s History Month celebration.

The focus of her talk will be Women in the Law and will trace women’s contributions to the American system of jurisprudence from the first woman admitted to practice law in the United States in 1869 until today, where more women than men are admitted to law schools.

“Women have come a long way in the legal profession, but we still have a long way to go,” said Ms. Rogers. “I remember representing buyers at a real estate closing a few years ago and the sellers’ attorney asked me, ‘Would you make a couple of copies of these checks, sweetheart?’ I doubt that a male attorney would have been called ‘sweetheart.”

“Today, being a female trial attorney is not a novelty. It has its advantages. Female trial attorneys are less likely to use a bullying style at trial. That tactic does not sit well with a jury. With that in mind I always take the high road and remain polite and professional.  And while I encourage clients to settle cases, there are some cases which just can’t be settled. So then Angelo and I dust off our litigation bags and off we go to court. So far, we’ve won every jury trial we’ve had.”

“I love being an attorney, and by speaking at Westchester Community College, I hope to inspire and encourage other women to go to law school. It’s a great profession, not only for women but for men.”
